One woman has always attested to her dislike for cold weather but still she managed to travel to Antarctica on two separate occasions even if she was the least likely person expected to embark on such a trip. What she wants is to be able to travel again to this place. No other continent was as cold as this one and the lady knew about this. She just thought that she wanted to be one of the few people that would ever see something like this.
Being situated 825 miles from the South Pole, she was a member of a support crew for scientists in 1988 at McMurdo Station on the Ross Ice Shelf. In today's language her position was a go for, but before she was referred to as a general field assistant. Written by the National Science Foundation was Survival in Antarctica which she needed to read. Other requirements include immunizations and an extensive physical exam. These are necessary for these will be no medical facilities there.
Other people may encounter some peril as they fly you out via helicopter for any medical treatment you need and this too can cost a lot of government money. Part of her trip to Antarctica involves an outdoor survival school she must attend after arriving. Part of her training will include the ability to make a sleeping shelter when she cannot find the base and locating crevasse fields.
Aside from a covered path leading to the bathroom from the ten this had four lavatories and two showers. A sign was posted saying how personnel are only allowed a two minute shower a week. Flushing is only done when necessary. Without any other order this stands. The reason behind this is to have water if a fire happens on the station. Using the equipment throughout the day especially in the water plant in sub zero temperatures led to numerous mechanical malfunctions.
When this happened, everybody had to cut back on water. So the primary concern was to make sure the kitchen had enough water to cook the food and there was enough drinking water on hand. From flushing to showering to doing the laundry, these are water concerns that are usually disregarded.
Any phone calls they had to make needed to be planned in advance. Waiting for a phone call is necessary so you need to put yourself on a waiting list until the weather clears up and your call comes through. Part of the communications link are ham radio operators.
They experienced a lot of difficulties but it was extremely difficult to deal with the cold. Summertime ran from October through December and during this time the temperature is around 32 degrees. As January arrives, temperatures will change again. She recorded some of the daily temperatures and wind chills in her diaries.
Weather can be the reason to work only in pairs. It can also interfere with outdoor travel. Intense weather conditions can strictly forbid this. A lot about herself was found out from the isolation. What resulted were changes. What she was before the trip was a very boastful person. Now, she knows there are things beyond her control, things she can't conquer alone. Things do not make her as anxious as usual.
Something odd is in that continent. When you look out over that continent and see miles and miles and miles of areas that no human being has ever walked before, it's like being on the moon and it's awesome. Here, man has been everywhere. From the rivers, the timber, to the mountains, man has been there.
